The Guastavino "Tile House"

The highly stylized home of Rafael Guastavino y Esposito (Rafael Jr.) in Bayshore, New York, was built in 1912 and is a showcase for what can be done with decorative tiles and Guastavino/Catalan/Timbrel vaulting. The house is presently on the market and is faintly reminiscent of the Fonthill Museum, in Doylestown, PA constructed between 1908 and 1912, by Henry C Mercer.

The listing agent for Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, Bonnie Williamson was very generous with her time and our small troupe of Guastavino aficionados spent several hours there, exploring the house and grounds. We marveled at the proliferation of mixed architectural metaphors, the wide variety of decorative tiles and one incongruous stained glass window that Fernando and Camilla identified as depicting the Puerta de la Justicia, at the Alhambra, the World Heritage site in Granada, Spain. Based on Guastavino family correspondence that they previously researched and their knowledge of local tile manufacture, Fernando and Camilla are certain that many of these tiles were imported from the Valencia region.

The Guastavino "tile house" is a truly unique home, with considerable historic significance that is just waiting for the right buyer.
