New York State Pavilion Tent of Tomorrow

Over four weeks in June 2008 Vertical Access technicians Kent Diebolt, Kelly Streeter and Josh Kunkel helped to investigate and document the existing conditions at the Tent of Tomorrow in Flushing Meadows/Corona park , Queens, NY. The City of New York Department of Parks and Recreation asked the project team, led by Robert Silman & Associates to provide recommendations and cost estimates for immediate stabilization and repair of the structure.

APTI Montreal 2008

APT's 40th Anniversary Conference will be Monday, October 13 through Friday, October 17, 2008 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Heritage Conservation, the theme of the APT Montréal 2008 Conference, celebrates not only the membership profile of APT but the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of heritage conservation (generally referred to as historic preservation in the US) approaches over the last four decades.

Through our firm's commitment to 1% For the Planet, Vertical Access was able to contribute $10,000 to the APT 2009 Conference, in support of the Restoration & Renewal Symposium. We are proud of this commitment and urge others in the preservation community to step forward and make a commitment to the future of our environment.

Joshua Kunkel and Dave Dayan

In April, two new full-time employees joined Vertical Access: Joshua Kunkel and Dave Dayan. Joshua comes to VA with extensive rope access experience, having worked on numerous projects throughout Africa, the Middle East, Malaysia and the United States from a base in Cape Town, South Africa between 2005 and 2007. These projects included inspection, installation, cleaning and repair work carried out on both industrial structures and buildings. Since 2007, Joshua has been living in New York City and has worked on the installation of netting at the New York Public Library, providing access and fall protection systems at several bridges and ultrasonic inspection of industrial systems. Joshua is certified as a level 3 rope access technician by the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) and has American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) level 2 ultrasonic inspection and level 2 magnetic particle inspection certification. Among Joshua's duties and responsibilities with VA will be leading our rope access client training program.

Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and worked for one and a half years as a systems engineer at Lockheed Martin before starting work in VA's Ithaca office. Since joining VA, Dave has achieved Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) level 1 certification and American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) infrared thermography Level I certification. He has also already put his wide-ranging computer skills to practical use by adding video hyperlinking capabilities to VA's Tablet PC Annotation System (TPAS). An avid hiker and climber, Dave is also a competitive ultimate frisbee player with the Bashing Piñatas.

Guastavino Timeline Update

Vertical Access has revised the "Guastavino Timeline: 1842-1968", first published in November 2007 on our website. To put the work of the Guastavino Company in context, the updated version now has a fourth timeline that includes events in the history of building technology and world history. The formatting of the timeline has also been changed. This is still a work in progress that will continue to grow and evolve over time.
