Keith's Trip

In December 2007, Keith Luscinski traveled to Idaho and Mexico on a month long road trip. After snowboarding for 5 days in Sun Valley, Idaho, he made the 30 hour journey south to El Potrero Chico, a climbing hotspot in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. El Potrero Chico, the "The Little Corral," is best known for limestone sport routes reaching upwards of 2000 feet. Keith tackled the famous "Time Wave Zero," (5.11a, A0) a 23 pitch route. After 2300 feet and eight hours of climbing, Keith and his climbing partner reached the summit. Keith describes the experience as, "unforgettable," especially after rappelling for 5 hours with no water in the Mexico sun.

Keith stayed at La Posada campground and restaurant which provided refreshments, showers, and toilets for only $5 a night per person. Keith and his friends spent 2 weeks exploring the cliffs. His hardest single pitch climb was an onsight of "El Curandero," (5.12a). Despite two weeks of climbing, he only touched a fraction of the routes available in an area that is quickly becoming one of the fastest-developing climbing locations in the world. With the warm winter weather, friendly locals, and superior rock, Keith hopes to return to El Potrero in the future. If you would like any information about transportation, accommodation, or how to avoid the many cacti and falling rock that inhabit the Sierra Madre mountains of El Potrero, you can contact Keith at keith@vertical-access.com.
