Fiber-Optic Investigation
Vertical Access owns and operates a fiber-optic
diagnostic tool called the "See Snake" for the
investigation of internal leaders/drain pipes, duct
work, cavity walls, crawl spaces, and other
locations where human access is not possible. This
rugged device consists of a miniature video camera
with wide angle lens and built-in light source
attached to 200 feet of heavy duty fiber-optic
cable.
Fiber-optic investigation of a drain pipe embedded
within a masonry wall at St. Thomas Church in New
York City.
The See Snake has a portable monitor and VCR that is
utilized on site for viewing and recording the video
feed and operator's narration. The See Snake can
fit in pipes 2" to 8" in diameter and can navigate
horizontal and vertical surfaces as well as
difficult 90 degree bends, diagonal runs, and connections.
A portable monitor with VCR allows the investigation
to be viewed live while narration is recorded on
site.
A built-in odometer records the total distance that
the camera travels to assist in locating areas of
deterioration. An added feature is a built-in radio
transmitter for locating the camera within walls or
other concealed locations.
Cracks in an old internal cast iron drain pipe were
identified using the See Snake.
