Mechanical Anchor Strength in Stone Masonry

The lab portion of the research was designed as a screening experiment to provide the basis for further research. Therefore, the objective was to identify those anchor installation and base material properties which correlate with anchor installation strength.
The controlled variables are:
    1) the type of stone: both Indiana Limestone and Ohio Sandstone were studied,
    2) the bedding orientation
    3) the type of anchor: a screw-type and an expansion type anchor were studied
    and
    4) the type of test: both shear and tension tests were conducted
The measured variables are:
    1) Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV)
    2) Schmidt Hammer, a surface hardness test,
    and
    3) Destructive Compressive strength testing was completed for a limited number of
    specimens
