Building description
Ball Hall is the oldest building on the campus of Keuka College and stands as the focal
point of the lakeside campus. The building currently serves as the main administrative
building and residence hall. The main portion of the five-story building is clad in brick.
The lantern and cupola on the east side of Ball Hall rise above the roof at the crossing where
the four gabled sections of the building's roof come together. The wood frame of the lantern
and cupola is clad in various materials: the lantern base, which meets the gabled roof sections,
is clad in asphalt composition shingles on the east, north and south sides and cement shingles
on the west side; the belfry base above the shingled section is clad in painted galvanized sheet
metal; the belfry level is clad in horizontal siding and has pairs of engaged pilasters at the
corners and a semicircular opening on each elevation; the cupola above the lantern is painted
steel sheet metal. Vertical Access surveyed the lantern and cupola as part of the preparation
of construction documents for the restoration of Ball Hall.
Scope of work
- Investigated and documented existing condition of exterior wood and sheet metal at lantern and cupola.
- Measured architectural elements of cupola to assist in preparation of repair documents.
